At NeuroPlay Studio, we use an episodes of care approach—an evidence-based model designed to maximize outcomes and empower families.
Episodic care is an evidence-based model of occupational therapy in which treatment happens in focused periods, or episodes, followed by intentional breaks.
Think of it as working toward a specific, functional goal during therapy sessions, then taking time off to practice and apply new skills in everyday life. These cycles of therapy and breaks are carefully planned and adjusted to meet your child's unique needs.
This approach recognizes that therapy is not just about showing up to appointments—it's about making meaningful, lasting improvements in your child's abilities.
By breaking occupational therapy into manageable bursts, episodic care helps your child:
Therapy sessions focus on specific goals—like improving handwriting, building fine motor strength, or enhancing sensory processing. These goals are targeted during each episode to maximize progress.
The break periods allow your child to apply what they've learned at home, school, or in the community. For example, if therapy improved fine motor skills, your child might practice buttoning clothes or using scissors independently.
Therapy can be hard work, and kids (and parents!) can get burned out. Taking planned breaks gives your child a chance to rest and re-energize, making the next therapy episode more effective. It also gives you, as a caregiver, the chance to focus on other activities or opportunities.
Instead of ongoing therapy with no clear end in sight, episodic care gives your family moments to reflect on progress and celebrate milestones along the way.
We conduct a comprehensive OT evaluation and collaborate with you to set specific, functional goals for your child.
Therapy sessions target the agreed-upon goals within a defined timeframe, maximizing progress through focused intervention.
Take an intentional break to practice skills in everyday life. Then decide together: new goals, continued break, or next episode.
The episodic care model is supported by research in pediatric occupational therapy and rehabilitation. Studies show that:
This approach aligns with best practices recommended by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and reflects current research on effective pediatric OT intervention.
